When I called to cancel future shipments, I was told to return the unused portion (32 capsules out of 60). It had to be returned insured and with a tracking #. That cost me $3.94 at the post office. The company has since charged me $58.76 while my return is still on its way to them. This is the ONLY time I have ever tried a trial offer and been told to return the product. The recording on their cancellation toll-free # says to give your unused portion to a friend to try, but once you reach a service rep, they tell you to return the product or pay! So, a $4.95 14 day trial has now cost me $67.65 and I only used 28 capsules. They are closed for the weekend, so I'll have to wait until Monday to contact them. Will I get my money back? Back a few years ago, Mr. Cranky was raising birds and had most of them in the garage. Then his breathing got bad and he wasn't able to keep up with cleaning up after the birds. Then the rats moved in to feed on the seed droppings and steal the birds' water. Mr. Cranky was up in the attic recently and found that our air conditioning ducts are full of holes. We've been cooling off an uninsulated attic and wondering why the bills were huge while the house was still warm. Now it's time to patch the holes before we can afford to run the A/C again. Praise God we found the damage before it got too hot around here, so we still have time to fix it before we both melt into puddles of perspiration. How anyone survived in Florida before air conditioning was invented is beyond me.

Look out! Male driver

Mr. Cranky got a Hoverround power chair. As he's learning to handle it, anything that lands on the floor is likely to be run over and all the doorways are getting chipped, dented, torn up (you get the idea.) Our doorways and openings between rooms where there is no actual door are only about 2 inches wider than the chair, which leaves very little room for error.
Our dogs are learning to move out of the way when they hear the chair coming, and Solomon, the parrot, is just starting to get used to riding on Mr. Cranky's shoulder with the chair in motion. He was jumping off with a LOUD squawk whenever the chair moved. Mr. Cranky has learned to turn off the power when he's parked at his desk and has had to put a brick under his computer tower. The off button for the computer was at the same level as his toes. When he hit the motion control by accident, the chair ran his toes into the off switch and he lost most of a Sunday School lesson he was working on. He also has a few bruised toes because his feet are longer than the footrest.
A friend from church built us a ramp so that the chair can be driven out of the house, and another friend gave us a wheelchair so that I can push Brian around when we shop a store that doesn't have power carts. We are praying for a vehicle that can be equipped with a lift to carry the chair so Brian can go places alone when he wants to. His little Civic is too light to handle a lift gate, and I put on too much mileage to be able to swap my 2002 pickup for his 1997 Civic. I'd wear out the Civic in no time; it has 175,000 miles on it now and my almost 5 year old pickup already has 123,000.

His breathing last tested as about 33% lung capacity, but he's losing weight (over 40 pounds so far with another 70 to go) and trying to stay active around the house. He works for 5 minutes, recovers for 10-15, and does it again; but he's gotten the fence repaired, his old workbench moved back into the garage from the shed and reassembled, and the gardenia bushes trimmed . . . .

More to come--if he doesn't knock the house down around me.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://crankyside.blogspot.com/2006/12/look-out-male-driver.html' title='Look out! He found a couple of hickory smoke flavorings on the net, and they are good. By tenting aluminum foil over the bird, he gets the seasoning to really soak in. He's tried a couple of standard bread-based stuffings (we had a few old boxes of Stove Top in the pantry) and also made his own chopped apple and cinnamon and raisins stuffing for one bird. He's planning another turkey for Christmas. I don't know what stuffing he'll use, but he wants to make a cranberry salad that he saw a recipe for. A year ago, he couldn't follow a recipe. We wrote a basic manual for other beginning cooks--it's only $19.95 at The Cranky Yankee

The medical profession strikes again

Last year, while Mr. Cranky's breathing was still good enough to survive surgery to repair the massive hernia left over from his aortic aneurysm surgery, he had no insurance and owed Shands for the first operation, so they kept delaying on assigning him an operation date even though we'd made arrangements with the surgeons. Now that he's on Medicaid and can get the surgery paid for, his health has deteriorated enough that they won't repair the hernia--they're afraid he couldn't survive the operation. So he's waddling around looking like he's about 11 months pregnant. He ruined his lungs by smoking for 46 years, but some of the drugs he's been given for one of his health problems have worsened or possibly created other problems. When he was hospitalized just after his diabetes was diagnosed, one doctor told him that if he weren't taking prednisone, he wouldn't be diabetic (prednisone increases insulin resistance.) The first cataract came off 2 weeks ago, and 3 days later, he was in the driver's seat again. He is now able to get to Sunday morning church services, and to go on the Sunday nights that I'm out singing elsewhere. He had 2 doctor's appointments last Tuesday, and I was able to stay home and get a good days sleep, rather than having to prop my eyelids open all night at work. Now that he can read again, he's working on the first lesson for his Calvary Baptist Sunday School blog.
He was able to go to the Trinity Rescue Mission last night, and gave a testimony there. His shortness of breath is the only physical limitation keeping him out of the pulpit, and we are praying the Lord will give him the opening to preach again.
And I'm still Mrs. Cranky, trying to keep up with the original "Cranky Yankee", my husband for over 20 years now. The "posted by" line on this blog will always show Cranky Yankee, but you'll be able to tell from the content if it was Mr. or Mrs. doing the writing.
There's a photo of Mrs. Cranky on her blog. One of these days we'll get a shot of Mr. Cranky to post here and on his Sunday School blog.

Update

The disability came in. The retro check got us the riding mower Brian needs to be able to do the yard. With his breathing problems, it took 2-3 days to mow with a walk behind. One pass and he'd be sitting down for an hour to catch his breath. We've since gotten his first monthly check. His checks cover the mortgage and a few small bills--having those off my back is a real relief. Medicaid is covering his medical bills, so our finances are in decent shape for the first time in a year and a half. Next month he starts being treated by the Clinic staff at Shands--his condition is too complicated for a GP to handle. Right now he's back in the hospital. The CAT scan they did showed some "abnormalities" in his lungs, but they didn't find any blood clots--which is what they suspected and were looking for. It was probably the only room available, but he got a very nice private room this time. I'm on vacation this week, so we would have been able to go to church morning AND evening and were looking forward to it. Because I work Saturday night and Sunday night, we usually only go to the Sunday evening service. And on the 2 Sundays a month that I sing at the local rescue missions, Brian doesn't get to go at all. He may have to reschedule his endocrinologist appointment for Tuesday, but he's determined to be out in time for his opthalmologist appointment the next week. His cataracts are so bad that he can't see well enough to read without a large magnifying glass, and there's no way he can see enough to drive. So that's where we stand at the moment, and since he's not here, it's time for me to go feed his fish.

Put this blog on your yahoo homepage!

Just click the link--how easy can it get?

Social Security delays AGAIN

Once we got the Medicaid card, we figured the disability would be close behind. The social worker at the Medicaid office said we'd only qualify if Cranky was declared disabled by Social Security. Well, we got a determination, but then the Review Dept. pulled the file. Our lawyer says they usually only pull them if the determination was positive, so that's a plus. But she also says that lately the Review Dept. has been reversing some decisions, which is something they rarely did a few years ago. Proper nutrition can work miracles; have you ever met a nutritionist who wasn't fit and healthy? Born in Brooklyn, reared on Long Island, he qualifies. Then, he's very opinionated, very intelligent, and quite willing to speak out. Of course, if he's short-tempered (especially when tired--like from long hours on the road), and does NOT suffer fools willingly, that helps.
Now his driving days are over. 40+ years of smoking have caught up with him, and the steroids for his breathing, combined with more weight than he should be carrying, have made him a diabetic. He's learned to cook so he can get the maximum enjoyment out of the food he can eat and inspired the Cranky Yankee website to teach others what he's learned.
Take a look at http://www.crankyyankee.biz
